Reflections about the place for humanity regarding the advancements in AI in 2023.

Hey all! Welcome to the place where being a little scared about the recent advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) is completely fine.

Remember the days when we joked about being dominated by computers when Siri was not even capable of doing some simple research on the web? I bet you didn’t imagine something like ChatGPT arriving so soon, huh?

First thing first, I’m assuming you don’t live inside of a shoe box and you know about all the fuss going around AI nowadays. If you are not, I encourage you to swipe through TikTok for a few minutes or search AI in Google, you should be able to catch up very quickly.

Additionally, if you only read about AI but you haven’t tried ChatGPT yourself yet, I really recommend you do that for a few hours and then come back here, if not you are not going to be able to fully understand what all of this is about.

Now that you are speeding up on the topic you must have plenty of mixed feelings. I know, the tools are impressive, but at the same time, it’s a little scary that they might be better than you in some areas right?

In my personal experience, I was amazed from the very first second I tried it out a few months ago. I described a simple math algorithm to solve problems based on game theory and request a code that could execute that. After pressing enter I could literally see the AI writing line by line at speed light, without doubts or mistakes. Want it in another language? Ask for it and boom! In just seconds there it was.

As the days passed I continued to use the tool and learn from it. Today I always have a tab open with ChatGPT to help me in my everyday tasks at work, college, or side projects.

So after feeling amazed, overwhelmed, anxious, and the three at the same time, I now feel capable enough of digesting all of this new world by sharing my insights on what the future might look like after this great breakthrough and how we can avoid being replaced.

Disclaimer: I’ll be referring mainly to ChatGPT to simplify and also because a list of cool AIs can be easily found anywhere, you are not here for that.

Avoid stagnating your mind

You’ll see that after a while of using these tools, your mind is going to start settling into a comfort zone where you won’t feel like thinking too much anymore or you’ll feel anxious about doing something without AI because you don’t think you can do it better.

I think it’s very easy to fall into this path and I highly discourage it. The moment you stop thinking you lose. Remember you are the one operating this software, not the other way around. The moment you surrender to it you will stop using your mind and will basically become slower and dumber.

I think they are great to improve our talent so use them for what they are, enhancement tools, if not your distinct value is going to get completely lost.

Specialized creatives for the win

I personally think that the rise of this technology is going to make the job market more challenging, and here’s why:

Let’s use the development industry as an example. As for today, companies needed thousands of developers, so the demand for these professionals was really high, making it tempting for people to get into the field.

That led to a lot of really smart people accomplish engineering degrees or study for years on their own, without any formal education but with great effort. You guys are good for now.

However, that was not enough to meet the demand, so a sector of people that just after a few months of coding boot camps got great jobs without actually bringing too much value to the table appeared. You guys should be a little worried in my opinion.

I think that really clever and creative people are going to lead this change by being enhanced the with this technology, but always remaining in charge. This will allow them to do the job of many not-specialized people just by themselves taking them out of the market.

If you relate with this don’t worry, you are not finished yet! I recommend you exercise your creativity and specialize in something so you can save a spot for yourself in this close future, if not, someone who will is going to replace you with a few prompts.

Creativity and specialization are skills that I don’t think will ever be replaced. For sure AI is going to get better and better over time, also speed is something we won’t be able to match, however, choosing which new problems to solve and how to do it in innovative ways are skills that no supercomputer has a chance to compete with.

AI on its own is not going to make you a millionaire

Last but not least, please stop asking AI to make you a millionaire. I’m tired of seeing blogs, videos on YouTube, and reels on Insta or TikTok showing you how you can earn 15k a month with no effort using AI.

I don’t have the crystal ball here but I’m pretty certain AI is not gonna be able to help you with that. Imagine the economic cataclysm that could bring if it was that easy!

However, I do think that AI is a great tool that can help you achieve that if you put in some creativity and effort. Forget about asking AI what should you do to become a millionaire, but you can rather use it to move faster on your road to success.

There are already some great AI options that can help you create a simple first version of your brand, webpage, Instagram feeds, marketing campaigns and so much more!

A few months ago you probably needed a medium team of people with some knowledge in each area to do this for you in a few weeks, now you have the possibility of doing it on your own in a few hours or days! But always remember, you are the captain, if you leave AI on its own it’s highly likely the ship will sink.

Final thoughts

That’s it, now it’s time to prepare ahead. Start specializing, exercise your creativity, and stop asking ChatGPT to make you a millionaire. If we follow these guidelines we should all be good.

Cheers!
